Curriculum

We follow the Victorian Curriculum for Years 7-10, which incorporates the Australian Curriculum and reflects the Victorian Standards and Priorities.

Our curriculum exposes our students to a broad range of subjects in the early years, before providing a more individualised program from Year 9.

Our curriculum is separated into the following stages below.

Breadth stage (Years 7–8)

Our girls are exposed to a broad range of subjects in Years 7 and 8 to open their minds to a range of ideas, topics and possibilities.

Year 7 Curriculum Handbook

Pathways stage (Years 9–10)

In Years 9 and 10, our girls begin to choose a more individualised program that suits their particular interests and pathways.

Year 9 Curriculum Handbook

In Year 10 some of our students elect to complete a VCE subject in an area of their interest.

Later Years Curriculum Handbook

Years 11 & 12

Our Year 11 and 12 students have access to a wide range of Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) pathways and subjects. For our applied learners we have a very engaging Vocational Major pathway.

In VCE we encourage our students to undertake School Based Apprenticeship and Traineeships (SBATs) and/or Vocational Education and Training (VET) subjects.

In both our VCE and VCAL Programs we encourage our students to undertake School Based Apprenticeship and Traineeship (SBAT) and/or Vocational Education and Training (VET) subjects.

Our teachers provide guidance in selecting subjects that suit their interests and strengths.

Key Strengths

Skills such as critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving and digital literacy are vital for our students to flourish in an ever-changing world. Recognising this, MFG has lead curriculum innovation in the areas of:

  • STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics)
  • Outdoor Education
  • The Arts

STEAM

We work closely with Deakin University, The Gordon and a number of secondary schools to create interesting and rigorous STEAM investigations. Our students run digital workshops with local primary schools focusing on programming, robotics, circuitry and Virtual Reality.

STEAM, or Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths – has been integrated into our teaching and learning. STEAM at MFG is about solving practical problems using a range of knowledge from science, technology, maths and the arts area. It is about discovery and exploratory learning.

Some of our investigations include:

  • How can you measure something you can’t reach?
  • Are our water tanks big enough?
  • What makes the perfect T-Shirt?
  • What is the best design for a sound-proof room?

Outdoor Education

In keeping with our belief in Earth Care, we believe that learning about, nurturing and engaging with our environment is essential for our students.

Outdoor Education is one of our most popular electives. From Year 9 through to VCE our students explore different leisure activities in a range of outdoor environments.

Year 9 and 10 study local environmental concerns in Geelong and the Bellarine and Surf Coast. In VCE the students investigate environments further afield including the Otways, the Glenelg River and alpine areas. Camps and activities include mountain-bike riding, cross-country and downhill skiing, snow camping, hiking, surfing, sailing, snorkelling, rock climbing, bone-seed weeding, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding.

We pride ourselves in achieving consistently outstanding VCE results in this area.

The Performing Arts

Music is major focus at MFG.  In addition to our core music curriculum and instrumental program, we offer VET Certificate IV in Music Industry (Performance).

And of course we are immensely proud of our acclaimed Sweethearts band!
