Welcome

from our Principal

Michelle Crofts

I am delighted to welcome you to our MFG website, which we will be expanding further in coming months. I hope you will find it to be an interesting window into our school and a useful source of information, whether you are a current or prospective parent or student.

This is an exciting time to be part of Matthew Flinders Girls. Over recent years we have developed innovative new digital technology subjects, introduced a new well-being focus and built a strong STEAM program. We’ve also set up a new leadership structure, visited our sister schools in Reunion Island and Lombok, seen our talented Sweethearts band win international acclaim and built a wonderful inner-city garden. And, we’ve been busy planning for an extensive renovation of our old buildings, which will deliver fantastic new learning, collaboration and recreational spaces for our students.

Our students, staff and parents all play a vital role in creating and contributing to the MFG community in different but complementary ways:

our students, through their involvement in school life and the way they support one another
our staff, through their profound influence on learning, and helping our students to be their best
our parents and carers, through their support of our girls’ experiences, challenges and opportunities at school.
If you are already a part of our school community, I thank you for the role you play and I welcome your ongoing participation in the busy life of MFG.

If you are considering sending your daughter to MFG, I encourage you to read this site, attend our Information Sessions and sign up for a tour of the school. When you visit us, you might be interested to see our new buildings taking shape, or find out about our comprehensive curriculum or hear about our wide range of camps and activities. However, interesting as these things are, I do hope you can get a sense of our wonderful community, with its spirit of sisterhood and mutual support, as I believe it is this that makes MFG a truly special place for your daughter’s secondary education.

our School Council President

David McKinnis

As a parent of a Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary School student, I am proud to be the President of the School Council.

Our school is located on the lands of the Wadawurrung People, and I pay my respects to their elders Past and Present and thank them for the continued care they have taken of this beautiful country for tens of thousands of years.

The school’s leadership team, teachers and students are amazing. Their progressive approach to education comforts me that I have chosen the right school for my daughter to learn, develop and achieve.

At School Council we have a specific role to play in the ongoing governance of the school. We will ensure that all council members input is heard and encouraged, and outcomes/decisions are in accordance with consensus of the group. Our School Council represents a cross sectional representation of our school community and the decisions we make and the input we provide is centred around the school’s core values. At the heart of every decision is the desire to continue to make progressive improvement in the learning opportunities for students.

In addition to the School Council, members also sit on the School’s Sub Committee’s (Buildings and Grounds, Reconciliation, School Policy and Finance) ensuring we continue to meet requirements and expectations in these key areas.

MEET OUR SCHOOL CAPTAINS

Izzy Ellis

Hi! I’m Izzy Ellis and I am one of our College Captains for 2023. For me, my passion in life is music and I am a proud member of Sweethearts band, an all-female soul band based here at MFG. I play saxophone and I absolutely love performing and playing gigs around Geelong and Melbourne.

Something that is incredibly important to me is girls pursuing and achieving the things they want to, and taking on the world! Here, at an all-girls school I aspire to help push for these ambitions in all areas of life, as nothing is too big or too small.

I’m very excited for this year, and I hope you get the chance sometime to say hi to Kiara and I!

MEET OUR SCHOOL CAPTAINS

Kiara Ryan

Hello! I’m Kiara Ryan and one of the 2023 College Captains. At Matthew Flinders Girls (MFG), Izzy and I work with our 2023 Community, Diversity and Environment Captains to organise many different events around our school and support student voice. One of my favourite subjects I take this year is Art: Creative Practice. It is so lovely to be able to make things, and explore and express perspectives of the spaces around us.

As a group growing into adults, we are beginning to understand functioning within a community and cultivating compassion. It is so important to support the agency and respect that strengthens that here, and push for equity at the centre of our education. I am grateful that I can work alongside everyone in our community to affirm that we can be comfortable and grow.

Please do introduce yourself, I hope Izzy and I see you around!
