Happy 244th birthday Matthew Flinders!

March 16, 2018

Our school is named after the young English navigator, cartographer and scientist, Matthew Flinders, who was born in England on 16 March 1774. Matthew made three voyages to the southern ocean between 1791 and 1810, and returned to England to publish his widely praised book and atlas, A Voyage to Terra Australis. In 1802, Matthew Flinders and a small crew camped on the area around Portarlington before rowing across Port Phillip Bay to explore the You Yangs. He climbed to the top and stood on what is now known as Flinders Peak, where he saw that curve of Corio Bay and the land that is today the bustling city of Geelong.
