The turtle is a symbolic link between the many people represented in these stories, travelling the same ocean currents as the fishermen and traders throughout history. Australia has always had more than one name-the Bajo and Bugis traders called it Marege; the Torres Strait communities referred to this large island as Keo Deudai and the Chinese mapmakers from the 1400’s knew Australia as Greater Java - perhaps a reflection of our true geographic position and relationship with our neighbours.
