The Messenger
Pak Hamjah tells of his experience in
the Maumere earthquake and tidal wave.
Two or three days before the earthquake
struck Pulau Babi, a turtle came ashore, out of the sea
and headed inland, a BIG one. BIG!! I saw it with my own
eyes. It headed inland and headed into a pond under the
coconut trees.
There are thousands of coconut trees
there. After that, we didn’t see it again, whether
he vanished or died, we didn’t see. Some people
say it was a sign, a sign of destruction, maybe..
On Saturday the 12th, in 1992, at 2 o’clock
in the afternoon, the earthquake happened. The waves came
from the west, south and southeast. The fastest was from
the west. As I remember, that afternoon, it began to explode.
…we heard the sound of the earthquake.
The water rose up high, about 5 metres, after that three
waves struck the village. The first – it was still
small. The second was bigger. The third – the tsunami
– hey! Extraordinary – it looked red. Like
fire, the third one, it was almost 100 meters high, higher
than a mountain, the sea was.
In a village of 1,000 people over 800
died, including children. For 2 days, we did not eat.
Just drank coconut juice. All the houses were ruined-all
smashed. Nothing left.
We just slept on the hill. Two days up
there. No food. All the boats were washed away. All of
them! I mean, there was nothing left. Only after 2 days
aid came from Maumere. They gave us some rice.
The people from Pulau Babi moved
to the mainland of Flores and now live near Nangahale
village. Today they survive by processing salt from seawater.

Pak Hamjah menceritakan pengalamannya
pada waktu gempa bumi dan tsunami menimpa Maumere
Dua atau tiga hari sebelum gempa bumi
itu menimpa Pulau Babi, seekor penyu yang besar keluar
dari laut, mendarat dan menuju ke dalam. Dia besar sekali!!
Saya lihat dengan mata kepala sendiri. Dia menuju kedalam
kolam di bawah pohon kelapa. Ada ribuan pohon kelapa di
sana. Nah, setelah itu, kita tidak lihat lagi, apakah
dia menghilang, atau mati, kita juga tidak lihat. Ada
penduduk di sana menganggap itu merupakan suatu pertanda,
pertanda kehancuran, kira-kira.
Pada hari Sabtu tanggal 12, tahun 1992,
jam 2 siang, terjadi kejadian gempa. Konon pusat gempa
bumi itu dekat Pulau Palue, ke sebelah barat. Waktu itu,
airnya mulai dari barat, selatan, tenggara. Yang paling
kencang, itu dari barat. Seingat waktu pertama, yang siang
itu, jam dua, sudah mulai meledak - terdengar bunyi gempa
itu… sampai meluap di atas ini, ya, tingginya kira-kira
lima meter. Baru setelah itu tiga gelombang menimpa di
kampung. Yang pertama- itu masih kecil. Yang kedua sudah
agak meluap. Yang ketiga – tsunaminya – eh!
Luar daripada biasa – kelihatan merah. Seperti api,
itu, yang ketiganya. Warna merahnya, dari air laut itu.
Tingginya hampir 100 meter lebih. Soalnya, lebih tinggi
dari gunung, air laut.
Lebih dari delapan ratus orang mati,
termasuk dengan anak-anak. Sudah dua hari kami tidak makan.
Hanya minum air kelapa. Ya, semua rumah hancur. Tidak
ada. Kami hanya menginap di gunung. Dua hari di gunung.
Tidak ada makan. Dan, kapal, semua prahu, terhanyut semua!
Pokoknya tidak ada. Hanya baru setelah dua hari ada bantuan
dari Maumere. Kami diberi beras.
Penduduk Pulau Babi diungsikan ke
Pulau Flores dan sampai sekarang tinggal dekat desa Nangahale.
Mereka hidup dengan mengolahkan garam dari air laut. |
