Ibu Vina speaks about the people of Alor's love for turtles and their connection to the moon.


My name is Vina. I like to weave. We used to weave in the old times when we saw the full moon. At this time our forefathers went to sea, they could see by the moon, they could sail everywhere, as it was with the weaving... when they went to sea, they saw lots of turtles...

The turtles would come ashore onto the sand, we would watch them looking for a place to lay eggs then we would begin to think about going sailing. Some wanted to plant crops, and some to weave, like the images on this sarong, such as fish or turtles, these sarongs are called ikat.

If we wish to weave something for our eldest child, in East Alor or Kolana, we don't do a normal weaving, we have to hold a big celebration and slaughter a cow or a buffalo, to make a weaving for our first child, when they are born.

Once our ancestors were shipwrecked on a small island. There was no food, no water- everyone was dying. Suddenly a large turtle crawled onto the beach. Under the full moon she laid hundreds of eggs. The people were saved because they could eat the turtle eggs. It was like a gift from God. We still tell this story and when we plant our crops, on the full moon we place the turtle stone in the fields. Ever since then down through the generations we have protected the turtles. We love to see all creatures turtles, crocodiles and biawak - monitor lizards. In the old days some crocodiles used to come into our houses, now they seldom come ashore but the turtles still lay their eggs. We don't kill them (turtles). The people from other villages, like Flores, they kill them. They like turtle meat we take care of them.

Ibu Vina berbicara tentang perasaan kasih sayang orang Alor terhadap penyu, dan mengenai penyu sebagai lambang dalam tenunan aslinya.


Saya bernama Vina. Saya adalah seorang yang suka menenun. Kami biasa bertenun waktu dulu kala, pakai melihat bulan purnama. Lantas, kalau orangtua kami, nenek moyang kami melaut, melihat pada bulan, untuk berlayar kemana2, begitupun juga, untuk pakai menenun, yaitu, suatu waktu, orangtua kami ke laut, tiba2 ada kura2 yang begitu banyak...Kura2 mendarat di pantai, sampai di pesisir, di atas pasir, di situ terus kami lihat mereka sementara mau mencari tempat untuk bertelur.

Di situ kami mulai timbul pikiran kami untuk mau berlayar, separoh untuk bertani, berkebun, dan separoh untuk menenun, yaitu seperti gambar yang sekarang ada di sarung ini..yaitu sarung ikan, sarung penyu, disebut sarung ikat namanya.

Dan, kalau kami mau menenun untuk kakak sulung kami, dari Alor Timur atau Kolana, bukan kami mau tenun tenunan biasa. Kami harus membuat pesta yang besar-besaran, membunuh kerbau, atau sapi, untuk perhiasan tenunan untuk kakak sulung atau anak sulung kami, pada waktu kelahiran.

Dulu, nenek moyang kami waktu berlayar dengan kapal, pernah terdampar di suatu pulau kecil. Tidak ada makanan atau air minum di sana - semua orangnya akan mati.

Tiba2, datang seekor penyu besar mendarat di pantai. Di bawah cahaya bulan purnama, ia menelurkan ratusan telur, sehingga nenek moyang kami selamat, karena bisa makan telur penyu itu. Itu seperti anugerah dari Tuhan.

Kami masih menceritakan kejadian ini, dan kalau kami bertanam, pada bulan purnama, kami menaruh batu penyu di ladang. Maka sejak waktu itulah, kura-kura selalu disayangi dan dilindungi oleh nenek moyang kita, yang selalu dibawa dari generasi ke generasi. Kami senang melihat semua binatang - penyu, buaya, biawak. Dulu, ada buaya yang suka masuk ke rumah kami, sekarang mereka jarang terlihat, tetapi penyu masih bertelur di sini.

Ya, penduduk Alor tidak suka membunuh. Mereka hanya melihat-lihat, begitu - tidak suka membunuh, kecuali orang dari kampung lain, dari Flores, itu orang suka membunuh, 'tapi kami tidak suka membunuh. Dia suka makan dagingnya, kami senang memelihara begitu, suka melihat-lihat sementara mereka berenang.
